What is the Xenios ECMO system?

Xenios ECMO is the extracorporeal life support (ECLS) platform from Xenios AG, part of Fresenius Medical Care. The current Xenios 2.0 console, successor to the Xenios console, runs veno-venous and veno-arterial ECMO, paediatric ECMO, synchronised cardiac support and CO2 removal with Novalung patient kits, for intensive care teams treating severe heart and lung failure.

Key features

Full ECLS range

VV and VA ECMO, paediatric ECMO, synchronised cardiac support and ECCO2R.

Integrated pressure sensors

Built into the disposables to avoid air aspiration at pressure ports.

Dual backup batteries

Two battery packs plus a direct pump-to-battery connection.

Alarm guidance

Alarms with recommended actions and trend views of key parameters.

Guided set-up

Step-by-step screens for priming and preparation.

Data connectivity

Treatment data transfer to hospital PDMS and EMR systems.

How ECMO runs on the Xenios platform

  1. Choose a Novalung kit sized for the patient and prime it using the guided screens.
  2. Cannulate the patient (veno-venous or veno-arterial) and connect the circuit.
  3. Set pump speed, blood flow and sweep gas while integrated sensors and alarms watch the circuit.
  4. Wean the patient from support and decannulate.

Frequently asked questions

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation pumps blood outside the body through an artificial lung to add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, supporting patients with severe lung or heart failure.

Veno-venous (VV) ECMO supports the lungs only. Veno-arterial (VA) ECMO supports both the heart and the lungs.

Yes. The platform covers patients from neonates to adults, with dedicated paediatric kits.

Novalung kits are certified for up to 29 days of use under MDR.

The console has dual hot-swappable backup batteries with 120–420 minutes of runtime.
