Sysmex XN-550: walk-away CBC testing for a busy laboratory

The complete blood count is the most requested test in most laboratories. When a technician has to feed tubes one at a time and decide which samples need repeating, the CBC bench becomes the bottleneck. The Sysmex XN-550 is built to remove both jobs.

What is the Sysmex XN-550?

The Sysmex XN-550 is a benchtop haematology analyzer from the XN-L series. It reports a complete blood count with a 6-part white cell differential, including immature granulocytes, at up to 60 samples an hour. An automated sample loader and automatic rerun and reflex testing make it the most automated model in the XN-L range.

What a 6-part differential adds

A 3-part analyzer groups white cells into three populations. The XN-550 uses fluorescent flow cytometry to count neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils separately, and adds an immature granulocyte (IG) count with no extra reagents. Our guide to 3-part vs 5-part analyzers explains when the fuller differential is worth it.

Why it is called walk-away

  • Automated sample loader: the technician loads racks; the analyzer mixes each tube and takes 25 µL.
  • Automatic rerun and reflex: flagged samples are rerun or sent for extra tests by onboard rules. In the XN-L series, only the XN-550 has this.
  • Low WBC mode: counts for longer, for accurate results in patients with very low white cell counts.
  • Storage: keeps 100,000 sample results.

Room to add tests later

Optional licences add reticulocyte counts (RET, IRF and RET-He) and body fluid cell counts, so the same analyzer can take on more work as the laboratory grows.

Who it suits

The XN-550 suits hospital laboratories, diagnostic centres and multi-speciality clinics with a steady daily CBC workload and limited bench space; it measures about 45 × 45 × 66 cm. It shares reagents and controls with the larger Sysmex XN analyzers, so a laboratory network can use it as a satellite or backup and keep results consistent. Quality control uses XN-L CHECK tri-level controls; see daily quality control for small laboratories.
